COTTAGES BY THE SEA

Cottage by the Sea, located in Queenscliff Victoria, was originally established in 1890 to provide care and accommodation for children recovering from illness. Since then the focus has changed to relief care and support for children in need from all over Victoria. Over the 110 years, relief care and support has been provided for tens of thousands of children from all over Victoria.

Cottage by the Sea are committed to providing a haven for emotionally, socially or physically disadvantaged children whose families may be undergoing some trauma. Short-term relief care in a holiday environment is provided for children, allowing the family a chance to cope with their difficulties secure in the knowledge that their children are being well cared for and enjoying themselves. Children are presented with many opportunities to develop self-esteem, learn new skills, discover life’s simple pleasure and make new friends.

Children are kept active and occupied during the day and visit many local tourist attractions (eg. Marine Discovery Centre, Jirrhalinga Wild Life Park, Amaze-N-Things) and experience numerous indoor activities (eg art, craft, cooking). They enjoy educational and recreational activities, along with rest and plentiful food.

The objectives for the children’s camp are as follows:

  • Care for children in greatest need of assistance in a safe, nurturing environment.
  • Provide opportunities for children to learn essential life-coping skills.
  • Give all families in crisis the opportunity of respite by caring for their children.
  • Facilitate education of children in basic health and hygiene necessary for daily living.

The grant by the Mary Potter Trust Foundation helped to fund a 5-day children’s camp for approximately 20 children at the Cottage.
