HOUSING FOR THE AGED ACTION GROUP (HAAG)

Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) is the only specialised housing and care support service for aged renters in Victoria. The organization is a community based, not-for-profit service provider that has been in operation for twenty-three years.
HAAG’s primary objective is the provision of support to older tenants (aged over 55) living in housing poverty in Victoria.

HAAG’s currently employs one full-time worked and four part-time staff. They have over 400 members, who perform a range of functions within the organization. Management of HAAG’s is by a community-based committee. The membership of this committee comprises of 13 people aged over 55 living in public and private rental accommodation.

The aim of the “Older Women at Risk of Homelessness” project is to increase the ability of older women to make informed choices about their housing through the provision of information about the rental housing options available to older tenants.

There are 55,000 older persons living in inner Melbourne area in
insecure accommodation, of which more than 70% are women. There is currently no information available to them in regards to housing options that is not complex and requires much footwork and many costly phone calls.

By increasing access to information about housing options HAAG aims to support the attempts of older women renters to make informed decisions about how to meet their accommodation needs.

The Mary Potter Trust Foundation has helped to fund a Project Worker’s salary to assist with this very worthwhile project.
