“Smith Magenis Syndrome (“SMS”) Camp - Camp Breakaway Inc.

Situated in San Remo on the NSW Central Coast, Breakaway is a non-profit charitable organisation committed to enhancing the lives of people with physical disabilities, at the same time allowing for relief for the families and carers.

This project is a respite camp for children with a rare disorder called Smith Magenis Syndrome (SMS) and their families. The 3 day camp provides a fun-filled camp which will include rest, relaxation and research into this complex and disturbing disability. Only 27 children have been diagnosed with SMS in Australia, these children show disturbing behaviours including head-banging, hand biting, picking at skin, pulling off finger & toe nails. A team of people researching this disease will also attend the camp and document findings and observations to learn more about this disease.
