Anti Slavery Project University of Technology Sydney (UTS) University of Technology Sydney (UTS), is located in Broadway, Sydney. The Anti Slavery Project is the first organisation of its kind in Australia, dedicated solely to eliminating all forms of human trafficking and slavery. In Australia, trafficked and enslaved persons currently face many of the same barriers to justice as refugees and asylum seekers. Once exposed to government agencies, the conferring of any type of legal status is entirely at the discretion of law enforcement and they are often detained or deported. The trafficking of vulnerable men, women and children is the third largest criminal enterprise after the smuggling of arms and drugs by organised crime groups, corporate subcontractors, large and small business owners and even men who traffic women through marriage. Research about the patterns and practices of trafficking Australia is lacking although cases have also been identified in construction, restaurants, factories and domestic work. The project seeks to impact the Australian governments policy response to human trafficking and slavery, increase the communitys capacity to respond and work to empower trafficked persons. << back to Previous Grants listing
