The Mirabel Foundation - Young Ambassadors Program

The Mirabel Foundation, located in Victoria was established in 1998 to assist children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to parental illicit drug use and are now in the care of extended family (kinship care). Mirabel provides a diverse range of support services, which aim to minimise the negative aspects of parental drug use on children and strengthen the capacity of kinship carers to provide a stable and nurturing environment for children.

The "Youth Ambassadors Program" fosters opportunities for young people to be active and positive members of the community, ultimately becoming mentors for younger children who have had similar experiences to themselves. Aged between 14-18 years, these young people have lived through immense trauma and sadness and overcome all adversity while breaking the negative cycle of drug addiction.

The program builds a supportive peer network for young people who often find themselves isolated due to the stigma associated with parental drug use. Regular meetings, camps, email contact and training sessions provide a safe environment where people can learn and explore crucial life skills such as communication, negotiation, leadership and conflict resolution.
